Roberts-Shields Memorial Company
We are a family-owned monument company who has been serving our families for well over 100 years. For over a century, our artisans have fashioned beautiful and tasteful monuments designed uniquely for each person they memorialize. We have been very blessed to have built a very unique monument company.
How We’re Unique
While most monument companies rely on just one or two employees for everything from initial consultation to installation of your memorial, we have trained experts at “every” step: consultation, design, graphics layout, cutting/sawing, hand tooling, engraving, shape-carving, and installation. You will not find a more thorough group of memorial professionals.

Roberts Marble Company was founded in 1898 in Ball Ground, GA. The Roberts family operated the successful stone mill in the area for decades, providing employment to many of their neighbors and friends. They opened a monument company in the early 1900s on East Ponce de Leon Avenue in downtown Atlanta near the Fox Theatre. In the 1930s, Mr. Roberts bought a monument company on Marietta Street, near Georgia Tech, that had recently gone out of business and moved operations to that location. This company had been operated by the Red brothers previously.
Welcome Mr. & Mrs. Shields
In 1959 Jim and Barbara Shields purchased the business from Mr. Roberts and began running the day-to-day operations. Mr. Shields was working in the monument business locally and was interested in starting his own business or buying one of the local monument companies. Mr. Roberts’ business was highly respected and when the opportunity arose to purchase it, Mr. Shields did not hesitate.
Hard Work Pays Off
Jim and Barbara Shields worked tirelessly for years building on and adding to the high standards of quality workmanship that had been associated with the company. In 1971, their son, Brandon Shields, began working for the company full-time after graduating from the University of Georgia. The following year the name of the company was changed to Roberts-Shields Memorial Company. In 1974, Brandon Shields took over full operations of the company.
In 1978 they opened an office on Brady Avenue, off Howell Mill Road between 10th and 14th streets, but kept the stone manufacturing plant on Marietta Street. Three years later, in 1981, they built a new stone plant behind their new offices on Brady Avenue and moved all manufacturing to that location. new feature is the inside display area, which is very appealing – especially in poor weather. new feature is the inside display area, which is very appealing – especially in poor weather.
